Art fair on stage at World Heritage Site Nijo-jo Castle

On October 6th (Friday), 8th (Sunday), and 9th (Monday) in 2023, "artKYOTO 2023" will be held at Kyoto's Nijo-jo Castle.

"artKYOTO 2023" is an art fair that takes place at the World Heritage site, Nijo-jo Castle, featuring carefully selected art pieces from domestic and international galleries and art dealers. Twenty-five galleries and more will exhibit a diverse range of genres such as antique art, modern art, craftsmanship, and contemporary art in three locations within Nijo-jo Castle, including the "Ninomaru-goten Palace Daidokoro & Okiyodokoro," "Tonan Sumi-yagura," and "Ban-sho."

"Tanimatsuya Toda," a tea utensil merchant with a history dating back to the Edo period, will introduce exceptional antique ceramics from Japan through the theme of "Old Kilns of Medieval Japan" from a contemporary perspective. "HATONOMORI ART" will showcase a wide range of works, from the latest creations of MORIUCHI Keiko, who continues to be active as the last member of the Gutai Art Association, to the works of MIYAWAKI Kimizane, who is reappraised as a pioneer of post-war abstract art and children's art in Japan. "GALLERY SIDE 2" will introduce works by Korean artist Jae Yong Rhee and domestic and international artists like Shizuka Mitsui. Additionally, as part of the 65th-anniversary celebration of diplomatic relations between Japan and Indonesia, Indonesian galleries "Gajah Gallery" and "msalman gallery" will also participate.

This event will create a special space where the rich history of the building, characterized by heavy beams in the ceiling and the harmonious combination of earthen and wooden floors, coexists with carefully curated art pieces.

■Highlights of artKYOTO 2023

<Ninomaru-goten Palace Daidokoro & Okiyodokoro>

"Ninomaru-goten Palace Daidokoro & Okiyodokoro" is an impressive exhibition area characterized by powerful horizontal and vertical beams where 20 exhibitors will present a wide range of artworks spanning from antique art to contemporary art.

"Tanimatsuya Toda," a tea utensil merchant with a history dating back to the mid-Edo period, will introduce exceptional ancient ceramics from Japan through the theme of "Old Kilns of Medieval Japan" from a contemporary perspective. In particular, the jars of ancient ceramics from the Heian to Muromachi periods possess a captivating beauty that enchants viewers, and they will convey the unique aesthetic value of medieval ceramics in Japanese ceramic history to the visitors.

"HATONOMORI ART," which primarily focuses on concrete art, has its atelier in Kyoto and continues to actively evolve as a member of the Gutai Art Association. In addition to showcasing the latest works of MORIUCHI Keiko (born 1943), who remains active as the last member of Gutai, the gallery will also present works by MIYAWAKI Kimizane (1916-1969), who is being reevaluated as a pioneer of post-war abstract art and children's art in Japan. The exhibition will center around abstract paintings that harmonize with the solid architecture, featuring exceptional Japanese artists whose international recognition spans from the post-war era to the present.

"GALLERY SIDE 2," known for introducing both young Japanese artists and international artists, will present works by Korean artist Jae Yong Rhee and artists from Japan and abroad, including Shizuka Mitsui. "GALLERY KOGURE" will embody its gallery concept of "Object beauty," "Super technic," and "Neo-culturalism" through presentations of works by artists like Akiko Nakaya and Terumasa Ikeda, which are filled with both skill and beauty.

<Tonan Sumi-yagura>

In the "Tonan Sumi-yagura" exhibition area, as part of the 65th-anniversary celebration of diplomatic relations between Japan and Indonesia, Indonesian galleries "Gajah Gallery" and "msalman gallery" will be showcasing their exhibits. Additionally, Kyoto's "GALLERY TOMO" and the art institution "KYOTO INTERCHANGE" will also be presenting their works.

"Gajah Gallery," which has a gallery in Yogyakarta, a member city of the World Historical Cities League chaired by the Mayor of Kyoto, continues to emphasize the international importance of Asian artists. They will introduce Indonesian artists such as Rosit Mulyadi and Ridho Rizki.

Ban-sho

The "Ban-sho" is a historically significant building located just inside the East Main Gate, which once served as the quarters for the samurai responsible for guarding Nijo-jo Castle. In this exhibition area, which makes use of this nationally precious structure, "TAKIYA ART," a gallery based in Kamakura, will be presenting their exhibits. Visitors can enjoy a wide range of artworks, from the modern and captivating pieces by Viennese-born ceramic artist Lucie Rie, who was active in late 20th-century Britain, to the highly acclaimed works of Tanaka Yu, known for ceramics that simultaneously convey tension and relaxation, almost like wrapping objects in cloth. This exhibition will feature artists spanning from modern masters to contemporary emerging talents, all within the backdrop of this historically rich space.
