MEGUMI OGITA GALLERY introduces works by artists who are particular about the finish of works whilst using traditional techniques and materials, as well as graffiti and outsider artists who directly convey their thirst and passion for expression, both in Japan and abroad. The obsession with tradition is the origin of Japanese approach to arts. There have been outstanding artists since pre-modern times, with no concept of ‘art’, but those works were the result of their persistence. In the same way that Japanese Buddhist statue making changed into unique and rich expression, Western painting, which was introduced to Japan, has been quietly transformed into unique Japanese works. Graffiti and outsider art, given the obsessive nature of expression, may also contain the similar concept. By dealing with contemporary and modern Japanese artists, as well as artists from overseas who share something in common, we hope to spread new expressions born from a commitment.
